Mining towns and urban sprawl in South Africa -
2020-4-1 · Our case study covered five municipalities in South Africa: Gamagara, Ga-Segonyana, Lephalale, Matjhabeng and Rustenburg (see Fig. 1).We selected these to represent the main mining subsectors in South Africa – iron ore, manganese, coal, gold and platinum, respectively – and to illustrate periods of decline, stagnation and growth.
