Laboratory (research or bench-top, 1–50 L) fermenters can be of borosilicate glass while pilot-plant vessels (50–1000 L) are of stainless steel. Regardless of fermenter type, (1) the culture vessel, (2) input–output systems ports for nutrient media, gas, and product, and (3) control systems are common to all.
